Regresé a recoger mi corazón/ I just came back to pick up my heart

"Mexico, beautiful and beloved, if I die far from you, tell them I'm sleeping and have them bring me here."

Every time I return to this country the words to that song come to mind and I sigh, a slow and long sigh. "You are in your house," everyone tells me here and yes it's true, I'm here in my house, my longed-for house, my house of dreams, my peaceful and comfortable house....and soon to be my real house. I won't say more about that matter. I will leave you with the mystery.

I was here in June doing what I love the most, singing, learning songs, working with some very talented musicians and without meaning to, I left my heart. Here it remained all this time patiently waiting for me to pick it up another day...oh, my poor heart, how I make it suffer, how I mistreat it even though I don't want to. How do I live without it? I don't know, but I do.

The question is: (because there is always a question) Will I be able to take it back with me this time? Will I be capable? Will it be possible? The last time I returned to my country I made a big mistake. I cried in front of the customs official. When he asked me what was wrong I told him I was in culture shock, that I didn't want to leave Mexico. Oh my god, Lorena, dummy, he could have thought I was a terrorist. Luckily he let me go with a "Welcome to the United States."

A Story/ Un Cuento

A Story

Once upon time a long time ago, there was a Moon who lived in the night sky. She was very beautiful and lived like a queen in the night sky. She had her many moods and she moved through phases until she became full and then she waned again. So she spent her time waxing and waning.

One night however, she became bored with her life, thinking there must be something more besides the night time. She wanted something different in her life, some excitement. Each night she decided to make tiny changes in her moods and phases so that each night she would inch her way to a place she had never been before.

As fate would have it, one night she came very close to the dawn. In fact she got so close to dawn that she got a glimpse of the Sun, a light so powerful she was nearly blinded by its strength. Immediately she shrank back into the night, but something had changed for her. Now that she had seen the sun, she wanted more of him. She wanted to know more about him, she wanted to bathe in his beauty, be warmed by his rays, discover his secrets. In fact, she wanted to be a part of him and wondered how she could do this, since they lived in very different worlds.

Again as time passed she inched her way toward dawn and tried to get even closer to the Sun, but she soon realized that he was much more powerful than she had imagined, to the point of being downright dangerous. But still she wanted to meld with his energy, lose herself in his warmth and beauty. She wanted them to become one.

"Oh, foolish Moon," the stars told her. "You can’t mix with the Sun. He will burn you up with his powerful rays. You will end up a pile of ashes. What are you thinking?"

Deep in her heart the Moon knew the stars were right. But the Moon was infatuated and could not stop herself. Each month she moved closer and closer to the Sun until one day she felt his rays burning her body but she stood her ground and let herself be burned. Then he spoke to her.

"Moon, do not come near me. You do not belong here with me. You belong to the night. I belong to the day. We cannot mix our energies. You are beautiful, I am strong. I cannot help my strength, I cannot stop it from harming you. You must return to the night sky. That is where you belong."

"But I love you," said the Moon. It was then a cloud appeared and covered the Sun so the Moon could look at his face and not be hurt. "You are so beautiful I can’t resist wanting to be with you," she said. Then the Sun sighed. "Oh, Moon, he said, you are a temptress. I will give you a tiny bit of my light to take back with you to the night sky, and there you will shine. I will be reflected in you and your light will be most glorious when you are in your full phase. People will look upon you and fall in love. We will reflect each other but live in our separate worlds. As you watch me set in the west when you are just beginning to rise I will sing to you. Listen for my song. I will send it to you as my rays weaken and sink down into the horizon. Catch my song and take it to the night for all to hear and love."

As the cloud moved away from the Sun’s face, the Moon drifted back up to her place in the night sky holding on to the light the Sun had given her. She was content now to stay in her place and reflect the Sun, to send her light out to all those who chose to look at her suspended in the night sky.

"Luna, no te me acerques. No debes estar aquí conmigo. Perteneces a la noche. Yo pertenezco al día. No podemos mezclar nuestras energías. Eres bella, soy fuerte.

Faces in the Stone/ Caras en la Piedra

One stone, five faces, called out to me on the beach. At first I only saw the face with the wide open mouth, but then as I picked it up and turned it over, other faces began to emerge, one, then two, and days later more faces appeared.

A frightened face, an angry face, a sad face, a "nah, I don't believe you" face all within one small stone flung from the ocean, pushed by the waves to land by the shoreline and somehow and for some reason find itself at my feet to be picked up and studied by me, a fellow traveler on this planet at this precise moment.

What do I have in common with this little stone? I have many faces too, a happy face when I wake up and take my first breath awakening to a new day, a sad face when I think about those less fortunate than me who suffer and die needlessly, an angry face when I see my government taking away my human rights, a "Nah, I don't believe you" face when someone is pulling my leg.

These are the faces you can see. What about the other "faces" that are not seen so easily?

How many faces do you have?

How many do you show?

Babies show all their faces every moment with no inhibitions. When do we learn to hide our faces? Our critical faces, our judgmental faces, our bigoted faces, our intolerant faces?

Let us bring out our loving faces and let them shine!

¿Cuándo aprendemos a esconder nuestras caras? ¿Nuestras caras criticonas, nuestras caras que juzgan, nuestras caras intolerantes?

¡Vamos a sacar nuestras caras afectuosas y dejarlas brillar!

Oh my Earth/ O mi Tierra

Oh my Earth, you are my hope
you are the air I breathe
you are my heartbeat
you are my muscles
you are my bones and skin
you are my energy
you lift me up and take me on your journey

As I live every moment here in this most magnificent place you have created for me. Without you I don't exist. Without you I am nothing, but I am part of you and you are part of me and together we are spinning in the now, in the now and the forever.

I love you, oh my Earth, how can I harm you? How can I hurt a part of myself? And yet, I have made mistakes and now I must correct them. Oh, Earth, forgive me for my ignorance, for my naivety. You are too beautiful for me to fully understand you. I see how your love for me is unconditional. I cut down your trees and new growth comes back. I cover you with concrete and grass sprouts up between the cracks. You don't give up. You keep on giving and giving. How much longer can you give? Have I gone too far in my taking? Will you still forgive me?

Oh, Earth, my precious Earth, just give me one more chance to heal you...just one more chance, I'll do it this time. I will. I promise.

My tears are my vow to you.

O, mi Tierra, eres mi esperanza
eres el aire que respiro
eres el latir de mi corazón
eres mis músculos
eres mis huesos y mi piel
eres mi energía
me levantas y me llevas a tu viaje

Sigues dando y dando. ¿Qué tanto tiempo más puedes seguir dando? ¿He tomado demasiado? ¿Todavía me perdonas?

Prometo.

Mis lágrimas son mi promesa a ti.

On the Coast of Maine/En la Costa de Maine

The shoreline calls me....I obey its call and delve into its beauty...
sandcolorseacolor texture micro infinity I search for the essence of every shell, every rock, every piece of seaweed with my camera, my third eye, so to speak....click, click.

As my feet dig into the sand and I wade in the salt water, gasping at its first caress colder than iced tea.

Arroyo seco/Dry stream

Arroyo seco

Mira mi arroyo seco
Que negro está, estancado
Sus piedras desnudas, sucias

Tiene sed mi arroyo
Anhela la primavera
Cuando las lluvias fuertes
Lo llenaban de aguas
Corriendo con prisa

¿Adónde llegar?
Más allá de donde estaban
A llenar el estanque
Que hicieron los castores

Mira mi arroyo seco
Los patos ya no vienen
Es puro lodo mi arroyo

Sus aguas frescas de abril
Se evaporaron cuando llegó
El mes de julio
Con su calor despiadado
Y sus temperaturas duras
Su sol que reseca la tierra

Pero así es, así debe ser
Es parte del ciclo de las estaciones
El arroyo con agua
El arroyo seco
El arroyo que vuelve a tener agua

La vida que soy
La vida que se me va

Dry Stream

Look at my dry stream
How black it is, stuck
Its rocks naked and dirty
My stream is thirsty
It longs for spring
When powerful rains
Filled it with waters
Hurriedly rushing

To go where?
Farther than where it was
To fill the pond made
By the beavers

Look at my dry stream
The ducks no longer come
My stream is just mud

Its fresh waters of April
Evaporated when the month
Of July showed up
With its merciless heat
And its tough temperatures
Its sun that dries the earth

But that’s the way it is
The way it should be
It’s part of the cycle of seasons
The stream with water
The dry stream
The stream that has water again

The life that I am
The life that leaves me

The other day I "composed" a song, but in reality it doesn't seem like I composed it, but rather that it came to me, or entered my body and came out of my hands or I found it among the lyrics that my Muse brought me (Muse number eleven) and the black and white keys of the piano knew how to give it life. The song was born, but not exactly because the truth is, I think it has always existed in the Universe, all the songs exist right now, because if they didn't I couldn't find (compose) the song.

Music is there or here, everywhere, omnipresent, the notes, well, the notes, where are they? In the air? It's like cyberspace. Where is it really? I don't know but it does exist.

Therefore, when I say that "I" composed a song, the "I" is something bigger than the "I" I use to identify myself. It's the "I" of the Universe, the "I" that is part of everything, the "I" of "I AM", the spiritual part of my essence and my little ego has nothing to do with this "I." So, the question is: Who composed the song? The notes exist, let's say they are flying around the Universe, free-wheeling, and because of the lyrics the notes begin to come down from the sky and float in front of my piano and the keys and fall one by one, not in chaos but in an order, in a perfect order and create beautiful music. Surely I have my part in all of this, but I am not the creator of the song, but rather the medium of expressing what the infinite Universe wants to say................................wow!

What are we really celebrating?

Today is the 4th of July, Independence Day, a national day of celebration and the banks are closed and the post office is closed and the grocery stores are closed and my question for today is: what are we really celebrating? Our "independence" from England? Well, we don't seem to be so independent or unattached from England these days in my book.

I know I try to stay away from politics, but I just feel compelled to say a few things about the direction my country is taking lately. Other countries (I'll mention no names) have rolled back the clock and forced their citizens to live in bygone times where women have been stripped of their basic human rights. Our government openly criticizes this action and yet...and yet, every day I hear about a new basic right that our constitution endorses being stripped away in the name of "terrorism" or "homeland security" or some such cover word so that we citizens don't realize what's happening right in front of our eyes. Doesn't anyone see that we are heading toward a police state government? Doesn't fascism scare people anymore? Didn't this happen in Germany? Does this world have to have an "us and them" mentality?

We are all one.

I know what I want to celebrate this 4th of July.

Tolerance.

Forgiveness.

Acceptance.

Empathy.

Understanding.

Love for our fellow humans, whomever they may be, whatever their beliefs.

Happiness.

The present moment.

A Deer in the Morning, after the Rain

It rained sometime in the middle of the night and this morning I put on my rain boots, the rain boots my daughter insisted I buy even though I wasn’t intending to buy rain boots, the blue rubber ones that are snug but not too tight and as I was slipping my foot into the left boot, I felt something strange inside, so I took it off again and found a small paper packet of sorts, something like a “freshness” packet that you might find in vitamin bottle…how unusual I thought, so I took it out and threw it away and finally I was off to do some exercise and just as I opened the door and went outside, I saw it—it was a deer standing next to my labyrinth and it stared at me for a moment as I stared at it, then quickly turned toward the woods and ran into the woods, crossing the now dried up stream and disappearing from my sight and it was then I noticed that I was thrust into the moment as my blue rubber booted feet ran onto the wet grass aiming for the labyrinth to begin my dance, my salute to the morning, my ritual to start the day listening to the piano music of David Lanz and celebrating my love for the Sun. Oh, yes!

Feliz domingo, feliz momento.

Soy Lorena.
