When you are born and raised in Mexico you are just Mexican, you are who you are and there is no problem, but when you come here you become someone else. You are now a “chicano,” “wetback,” “alien,” and you are not understood. In your own country you are not an immigrant, you are you with your family who loves you beyond love and who cares for you beyond caring, but when you come here you must fight for your basic rights, for the rights that others take for granted. You must prove yourself to be good and honest because here you are not who you are, you are a “foreigner”. You come to do work that no one else wants to do. You are glad to have a job, no matter how menial. In your own country you are calm and at peace, but when you come here you must be on your toes and try to fit in and be who you are and not be who you are at the same time. It’s a real trick. In your own country you can think the way you think and it’s okay, but when you come here you must think differently. And that’s the way it is, and is it fair you may ask, and the answer is “no, it’s not fair,” but that’s the way it is and you come here anyway, and you have no choice but to accept it this way because it is what it is and you are who you are and life goes on and somehow you will survive, you will make it, you will figure it all out.
I salute you and I love you.
Soy Lorena.

It's a Cultural Thing
I’m in a big store like a Kmart. In the electronics section there is an electrical outlet sticking out of the floor, right in the middle of the floor where shoppers pass by with their shopping carts. It’s just there for no apparent reason, sticking up at least three inches. Now the interesting thing about this is that only a Gringo will trip over this electrical outlet. Did I mention we are in Mexico? The Mexican shoppers who pass by will somehow know not to trip on this outlet. They will see it out of the corner of their eye, “de reojo” and go about their way. But a Gringo, ah, a Gringo will not expect any kind of obstruction in the floor and consequently will trip right over it.
It’s a cultural thing. In the United States, we are taught that someone else has the responsibility for our safety and if we fall or trip over something, well, some other person or company is to blame and must pay for our mishap. Consequently, we are less vigilant about where we happen to put our feet when out and about in the world.
In Mexico, culturally speaking, everyone knows that each person is responsible for his/her safety. If you trip over a rock or pipe sticking out of the sidewalk there is no one to blame, no one to pay for your mishap. You are on your own.
Is one way of life better than another? I’m not saying that. It’s just different and only the Gringo will get his foot stuck in a pothole.
I find that very interesting.
Soy Lorena.

Ah, México
It’s the kind of cold that goes through to my bones as if my flesh were not even there. It freezes my brain and I can’t remember things. The skin on my hands if I go out without gloves becomes red and raw and dry. It’s the deep freeze winter where the dew turns to solid ice. Each day the stream becomes narrower and narrower as its banks harden into thick planks of ice. It’s the kind of cold that instills fear in me.
BUT I’M GOING TO MEXICO!!!
And even if it’s 32F there, it will be a welcome change for me and I will breathe deeply and not be afraid, because the warmth of the sun and the people there will defrost me and bring me back to life.

Translation? Let me see...
All the way here I was thinking, "My Mexico, my Mexico, I'm going back to my Mexico."
I recognize everything as if I had never left, the streets, the air, the people, the aromas.
As if I had never left this beloved place.
Maybe a part of me has always been here, my heart for example, or my soul.
Life is short and friends are very important to me, the good beings I share this life with, the beings from my country, the beings from San Miguel de Allende. How precious it is to come back and see familiar faces with their smiles and their welcomes. Needless to say, I am grateful, blessed even.
This is just a greeting to my Mexico, my precious beautiful Mexico.
My heart is yours.

¿Soy igual o soy distinta?
Ah, tengo doce días más de edad.
Así
es
la
vida
en este planeta
en este momento…
Soy Lorena.

El Cuerpo y el Amor/ The Body and Love
The Body and Love
While we are living in this body of ours, it is never satisfied. It always wants more, wants to be indulged, constantly catered to--sometimes just plain self-indulgent.
For example, the body is hungry, you give it food and it's satisfied for a few hours, then it's hungry again, or thirsty or tired.
The body needs to move, it has to sleep, to rest while we are here on this Earth, living this life--I'm not complaining, that's the way it is.
Change of theme. (I'm not sure if these two things are related) The thing that moves me the most is the fact that we feel love and I wonder if we need a body for that. This is what ties me to this life, the love I have for my daughters and my grandson; the love that I have for the special people in my life, the man with whom I live, the people who are part of my musical creative work...even my ex-husband. Love is big, extensive, my heart can contain it, it doesn't get full, like cyberspace it has no end.
I wonder what will happen to this love when I leave this body some day?
(Sorry, there is always a question to ponder)
Soy Lorena.

Regresé a recoger mi corazón/ I just came back to pick up my heart
"Mexico, beautiful and beloved, if I die far from you, tell them I'm sleeping and have them bring me here."
Every time I return to this country the words to that song come to mind and I sigh, a slow and long sigh. "You are in your house," everyone tells me here and yes it's true, I'm here in my house, my longed-for house, my house of dreams, my peaceful and comfortable house....and soon to be my real house. I won't say more about that matter. I will leave you with the mystery.
I was here in June doing what I love the most, singing, learning songs, working with some very talented musicians and without meaning to, I left my heart. Here it remained all this time patiently waiting for me to pick it up another day...oh, my poor heart, how I make it suffer, how I mistreat it even though I don't want to. How do I live without it? I don't know, but I do.
The question is: (because there is always a question) Will I be able to take it back with me this time? Will I be capable? Will it be possible? The last time I returned to my country I made a big mistake. I cried in front of the customs official. When he asked me what was wrong I told him I was in culture shock, that I didn't want to leave Mexico. Oh my god, Lorena, dummy, he could have thought I was a terrorist. Luckily he let me go with a "Welcome to the United States."
Soy Lorena.

Am I looking for a house, i.e. walls, roof, floor, brick, concrete, or am I looking for a home? There is a big difference. "A house is not a home," is the expression, tenemos que crear el hogar, it doesn't happen by itself.
There is something about the energy of this country that moves me, that attracts me to its people, that brings me back again and again. It's hard to explain.
When I am here, be here completely, when I am in my country, be there completely. Have no longings.
Soren Kierkegaard dice: "Our life always expresses the result of our dominant thoughts."
It all begins with the thought, then the action, the decision and the magic of turning it all into a reality. Anything is possible.
And everything is possible. JUST DO IT!
It will happen.
Sí, pasará. Estoy convencida.
Soy Lorena.

My Three Little Pigs
Where do these little characters come from? Where do they live? On the "farm?" The "farm" of my imagination. Maybe. I imagine them, I invent them, I find them to be more real each day, with their voices, with their problems, their conflicts--and I sing them, and the musicians and I sing them, bringing them to life. Do they exist? And if they exist, where are they?
Where are all of the characters in novels? The characters based on flesh and blood people. These characters sometimes seem more real than real people. When I finish reading a story, for example, I feel like I know the protagonist better than my representative in Congress, even though he answers my letters once in a while.
The story of Huey, Louie and Dewey, a story I invented in order to help my students learn Spanish, exists first in my mind, then on paper and finally in the mind of my students, and then it exists in the Universe. It's strange. There are so many things in the Universe, and it never gets full.
My crazy thoughts for today.
Soy Lorena.

(Tomorrow English.....maybe)

The mystery of time as a changing truth
"I don't have time."
"It's time."
"How fast time goes."
"At the moment of the fall, everything happened in slow motion."
"The minute seemed like an hour."
What is time? Does it really exist or do we invent it?
When we are waiting for something, time passes slowly, but when we are involved in some fun activity, time pases quickly. Is is tricking us or what? We create our own reality and therefore the truth, or a truth that varies from person to person. In my opinion time is not a set truth. Our point of view affects our reality or our "truth" and our manner of living time.
Eckart Tolle says: Don't wait anymore. If you live each moment present and alert, accepting what is, then you will never be waiting. I like this idea.
What does this have to do with my stay in San Miguel? Well, I'm going to explain. I'm not working. I'm not living my normal routine. I don't have to cook or clean the house or drive long distances. Nevertheless, time is not passing slowly for me. It's flying and I'm amazed that when I'm at home there is time for all the things I do. The question is: Does time change or is it something that I do? I don't seem to be living my moments thinking about the past, nor am I thinking about the future. Hmmm. It's a mystery. If anyone has the answer, please tell me.
Soy Lorena.

"No tengo tiempo."
Pues, voy a explicar. No estoy trabajando, no estoy viviendo mi rutina normal.

Tomorrow English)
Soy Lorena.

Gracias, Universo
Me desperté, salí a caminar.
Thank you, Universe
I woke up and went out for a walk. It was cool. I looked at the sky. The moon was still shining. The cars passed by me. There were few people in the street, but nevertheless hurrying to get to work.
I arrived at the Posada La Aldea. I looked at the sky. The clouds looked like angel wings. I felt I was a part of everything. Suddenly I wanted to cry, but to cry tears of happiness. So again as it often happens, gratitude filled me up and I began to give thanks for being alive, for being here in Mexico, in San Miguel, for the fact that Mexico exists, for the diversity in the world, on the planet, in the universe.
I give thanks for all the good things that exist in my life like music, poetry, love, talks with people, meeting new people, composing songs, reconnecting with friends, the good fortune to be loved, my daughters who are my best friends, my teenage grandson who is still sweet, the love of my life-my lover and my dreams, and the uniqueness of a precious friendship.
I went into the hotel. I asked my question. I got the answer and I left while the sun was rising, changing the freshness of the day.
I went back to the house in time for breakfast and that's how my third day in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, Northamerica, planet Earth of the solar system of the Milky Way that forms part of the Infinite Universe began.
Soy Lorena.

Oh, my God, I'm back here three hours and already I have seen old friends, visited familiar places, made a new friend and talked politics, sent emails and in other words gotten the ball rolling....amazing. It's warm and breezy and dry and delicious and I'm having my first capuccino on the terrace at Pueblo Viejo.
If that's not being indecisive then I don't know what is. ¿Verdad que sí es indeciso? ¿Es caprichoso? ¿Inquieto? Are you indecisive? Do you change your mind several times before making a decision? Do you make a decision or do you just let things happen? Are we like the planets or are the planets like us? ¿Quién influye a quién?
Are we talking about chaos here? Is Saturn's orbit chaotic? El caos existe seguramente, pero caray, un planeta debe seguir un sendero fijo, no debe andar atrás y adelante....como nosotros, los seres humanos...or should it?
I will leave you with a quote from Brian Swimme, a very smart guy who knows alotabouttheuniverse--
"The discovery of mutations is the discovery of an untamed and untamable energy at the organic center of life. For without this wild energy, life's journey would have ended long ago."
You'll have to figure it out for yourself.
So here I am in my favorite place. Aquí estoy en mi lugar favorito...with wild untamed and untamable energy.
May I use it wisely. Que la aproveche.
Y a ustedes también.
Use your energy wisely...but USE IT!!!
Soy Lorena.

Revisiting Mexico
So, I have posted my photos from January, Yucatan-Chiapas
on PictureTrail. This link will take you there and then you can listen to a piece of music I wrote and click on "View my photos" and you will find two albums, one of our trip in January. Feel free to post comments, I would like to hear from people, friends and family.
Entonces, le pido al Universo que me lleve otra vez a mi Tierra del Sol, a la tierra de mi Sol, para que me sienta a gusto de nuevo, para que aprenda lo que tengo que aprender, para que me dé lo que tiene que darme, y también para que yo dé lo que tengo que dar...es mi esperanza, mi ilusión, mi futuro, mi presente, mi pasado, my here and now and my "always," and don't ask me what that means, and don't even ask me what I'm talking about.
A lo mejor no tiene sentido.
But somebody somewhere understands.
Maybe you--
Maybe me--
¿Quién sabe?
Soy Lorena.

Iguana skin!
Just the other day I happened to see my legs........yikes! Dry, peeling skin, yuck, iguana skin! Oh no!! I know it's been a dry winter and my throat has felt it, but my skin--I've been using body lotion. Y de repente, me di cuenta. I suddenly got it.
Oh, this is my Mexican tan peeling away, flaking skin, copos de piel llevándose su color bronceado, sólo una memoria de los días dichosos que pasé en la Tierra de mi Sol. (Forgive me for getting carried away). Y en seguida otro pensamiento: this is just the top layer of my skin, a meaningless cover, dead cells that must disappear in order to grow new, fresh cells. Nothing is lost really.
The original colors are still there, the reds, the blues, they are forever waiting for the honor to be sacrificed.
I've heard that Time doesn't really exist, that it is our invention, or just an illusion that seems to be present on this planet. Then we are in eternity and everywhere simultaneously. I have trouble getting my head around that. Me cuesta trabajo comprenderlo.
Yes, I'm supposed to calm my mind. Easier said than done.
No tengo preguntas hoy.
Just be in the moment, Lorena.
Okay...
Soy Lorena.

The Last Day
30 de enero, 2007, the last full day on Holbox and for me it´s the last day of our vacation. I don´t count the days in Cancun. We will be doing errands, packing up, catching up with the latest news at Dos Playas...just tidying up everything before we go back to familiar surroundings where everything is understandable and routine. Back to mid-winter and the weather that slaps me in the face and reminds me to be humble. Back to English 24-7 where our lives are ordered and neat and organized and there are no stray dogs.
Besos y abrazos.
Soy Lorena

We have the run of this place. We cook our own breakfast, make our own coffee and act like we live here year round. I think all the guests have gone except for a German woman and her daughter.
In some ways it´s beginning to feel like New England here. The weather is changing every five minutes. One minute it´s windy and cold, the next, the sun comes out and it´s hot, then the wind picks up again and it´s cold. So we put on windbreakers and shirts, then take them off, then put them on again. Oh, well, it could be worse. I could be shoveling snow or slipping on ice.
So, I´m not complaining, no me quejo.
Here I am in Holbox on the beach and I´m writing about snow. Who´s in the moment now?
Maybe you are...maybe I should get there, savor the last few days of this trip.
What a trip it´s been.
I don´t want to leave Holbox.
I don´t want to leave Mexico.
I will just BE HERE for every last moment I have.
BE HERE
BE HERE
be here.

Cartwheels on the Beach
¿Volteretas laterales en la playa? Does that make sense in Spanish? When I was a child I used to do ballet, tap and acrobatics and one of my favorite acrobatics was the cartwheel. I could do ten cartwheels in a row and not get dizzy. I can´t remember the last time I did a cartwheel, but I did three today on the beach. I could have done more. El cuerpo se acuerda, it´s body memory, like riding a bicycle. Once you learn to ride, your body never forgets.
"How do I have time to work for six hours at home?" He said.
"I don´t know, it´s different."
"That´s why we´re always rushing."
"And we drive such distances just to go to the bank and the store."
Pense´, My life is going fast. Each amanecer, each anochecer. Throughout most of the trip we did a lot. Now, these last few days, we are doing nothing and the time still flies by. It doesn´t slow down.
I shall end today´s blog with a line from Waiting for Godot, by Samuel Beckett.
NOTHING TO BE DONE.
Soy Lorena.
