Fall

Fall forever

Fall to the depths of the infinite

Fall to the depths of time

Fall to the depths of your Self

Fall as low as you can

Fall without dizziness

Into all spaces and ages

Into each soul, each longing for land, each shipwreck

Fall and scald the stars and the seas as you pass

Scald the eyes that watch you, the hearts that await you

Scald the wind with your voice

The wind that’s trapped in your voice

And the night growing cold in its cave filled with bones

Fall into childhood

Fall into age

Fall into tears

Fall into laughter

Fall into music all over the universe

Fall from your head to your feet

Fall from your feet to your head

Fall from the sea to its source

Fall to the final abyss of silence

Like a sinking ship drowning its lights

Y Otra Vez el Otoño/ And Once Again, Fall

¿Qué me pasa? ¿Qué me pasa?

No quiero estar pelón.

And Once Again Fall

Time went by and Alon kept on growing under the watchful eye of his parents. He watched the cat almost every day trek around the grass chasing insects or lie down in the sun to clean his face or play with a dried up leaf batting it with his paw.

Alon imagined what it would be like if he could go around like that, if he could walk wherever he wanted, if he could run in the grass, if he could go far away from here. But in reality, he had no idea what it would be like if he could do all of that. The only real thing he felt was frustration at not having that freedom.

So Alon daydreamed about running in the grass like the cat or flying like Chico when he became aware that one of his leaves was red on the tip.

“Mom, Dad!” he shouted. “Look, my leaf is no longer all green, it has a red part. What’s happening to me? What’s happening to me?”

Julius chuckled. “Don’t worry, my son, it’s nothing.”

“Dear Alon,” his mother said to him, “summer is ending and fall is on the way. Your leaves will change from green to a deep and beautiful red color.”

“Really?” asked Alon.

“Yes, our leaves become very pretty before they dry up and fall off.”

“They dry up and fall off?!” cried Alon. “What am I going to do without my leaves? I don’t want to be bald. Besides not being able to go anywhere, now my leaves fall off and I end up bald.”

Alon was beginning to think that his existence was going to be totally useless. Why was he born? For what purpose? So he could be a stripped stick standing there the rest of his life unable to do anything? Oh, how difficult it is to live on this planet, he thought.

But his father realized what Alon must be thinking and explained that being an oak tree meant that you drop your leaves in order to spend the winter peacefully and half asleep so that you can wake up again in the spring and grow new and beautiful leaves. Nature created it that way and everything was perfect.

But Alon was not convinced.

--No sabemos todavía.

--¿Cómo quieres que sea, Abril?

--Que sea fuerte, sabio y atrevido.

--Entonces, su nombre será “Alón Atrevido.”

--Alón Atrevido….me gusta,--dijo ella.

¡Chas!

Alon

“Alon,” said April.

“Alon,” replied Julius, “Hmmm, that’s what he is, but what will he be like?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“How do you want him to be?”

“I want him to be strong, wise and daring.”

“Then his name shall be ‘Alon Daring.’”

“Alon Daring…I like that,” she said.

While the oaks were talking to each other, little Alon was barely discovering the world, looking around when he felt something climb up his stem tickling him.

“Who are you?” he asked the strange little animal with many legs.

“I’m an ant and I’m in a hurry.”

“Why are you in a hurry?”

“I have a lot to do,” answered the ant.

“What do you have to do? asked Alon.

“Oh, don’t you know?” said the ant impatiently. “I have to work. I have a lot of work.”

“Work? What’s that?”

“You ask a lot of questions, little oak tree.”

“You see, I just came up out of the ground and I don’t know very much yet.”

“Well, that’s obvious,” said the ant. “We ants work. That’s what we do. We have to bring food to the queen.”

“Who’s the queen?”

“The queen is the most important ant of all the ants. She’s very special. We bring food to her and she gives us blessings.”

“And what are bless—“ Alon was about to ask when the ant interrupted him.

“Look, I can’t spend all day chatting with you, little oak, I came to cut off one of your leaves to take to my nest.”

“No!” yelled Alon. “Don’t cut off one of my leaves! I’m small and I have so few!”

But the ant paid no attention to him. Snap! He snipped off a leaf and took off running, carring the leaf on his shoulders.

“Ow!” cried Alon. “That hurt. Now what am I going to do?”

“Fool,” said the ant as he was leaving, “you’ll grow another leaf.”

“I will?” said Alon, but he thought This place is hard. Maybe if I move somewhere else things will be better.

Era Otoño/ It was Autumn

¿Aries? ¿Jupiter?—sugirió.

--¡Mercurio!—dijo.

--Mercurio tiene un temperamento demasiado explosivo. No creo que queramos un hijo así.

--Sí, tienes razón,--dijo.

--¡Ya sé! –dijo de repente.

It was fall again and the days were changing. The sun was not as strong as it was in summer and the leaves were beginning to shed their greenness, turning to orange, red and yellow. Soon they would be falling from the trees to cover the frosty earth with their crinkly curled up crispiness, preparing their slow decomposition back into the ground where in the Spring they would help to nourish new growth.

Acorns were starting to fall too. The squirrels would pick them up, take them a few feet away and bury them intending to have them as food for the long winter months ahead, but most of them would be forgotten and would sprout up in Springtime after the first rains of April. (Nature’s inadvertent little tree planters, those squirrels).

Time went by and two oak trees who had spent many seasons together watching human lifetimes come and go, dropped their acorns, their future offspring, and watched as the squirrels either took them away or buried them nearby deep in the earth. Soon the snow began to fall and after shaking the last of their leaves off their branches, they breathed a sigh and went to sleep for the winter.

*********************************

When the last of the snow melted and new buds began to sprout from the branches of the oaks, the rains came watering the earth and softening it up for new growth to burst forth sending its green shoots up toward the sun in a welcoming display of new life.

“Julius,” whispered the oak’s long standing partner. “Look.”

“Hmmm?” Julius croaked rather sleepily.

“We have a baby,” she said.

“A what?” He was more awake now.

“A little sprout. Look at his adorable tiny leaves.”

Julius peered down tenderly. “Oh,” he sighed, “He looks like you, April.”

She blushed and shook her leaves. “You really think so?” she asked.

“Definitely,” he said.

“What shall we call him?” April asked.

Julius thought for a moment. “Well, we want to give him a name that will encourage him to grow tall and strong, a name he can be proud of.”

“Samson? Aries? Jupiter?” she suggested.

“What about ‘Mercury’?” he said.

“Mercury has a fiery temperament. I don’t think we want our son to be like that.”

“Yes, you’re right,” he said.

“I know,” she said suddenly.

Si me vieras/If you would see me

Si me vieras pensarías que

Estoy bailando sola,

(suspiro).

If you could see me you would think that

I was dancing alone,

But it’s not true, I don’t dance alone

In fact I never dance alone.

I am with the sky, the air, the grass, the trees

The freshness of the morning, the sun and my shadow

Yes, my shadow, I dance with my shadow

My shadow that follows me wherever

My shadow that kicks around, my shadow that leaps

That throws its arms wide open

As if they were embracing the earth

My shadow that never tires

That loves the Universe and never criticizes anything

It simply follows, imitates, mirrors, spins around, runs,

And has no problem in life.

If only I could be like my shadow.

(Sigh.)

Oruga/Caterpillar

Oruga

Oruga suspendida en el aire
Desde lejos te vi
Torciendo tu cuerpo
En medio de la nada

Estirándote en la mañana
Frente al sol
Tu tela invisible
Ilusión óptica

No se me ocurrió
Hasta después
Sacarte una foto
Pero ya era tarde

Cuando regresé con mi cámara
Te habías desaparecido

¿Desayuno para algún pájaro?

Caterpillar

Caterpillar suspended in the air
I saw you from afar
Twisting your body
In the middle of nothing

Stretching yourself in the morning
In front of the sun
Your web invisible
Optical illusion

It didn’t occur to me
Until later
To take your picture
But it was too late

When I got back with my camera
You had disappeared

Breakfast for some bird?

Everything is the same, everything is different

I come and go. I spend time in my second home, my beloved Mexico. It’s the same but it’s not the same. My expectations didn’t come out the way I had thought they would. Everything changed in a way totally unexpected. That’s life…and me? Am I the same or am I different? Well, I’m not the same because I have lived two weeks more, or rather twelve days to be precise, twelve days more of experience, twelve days of seeing the sun, the clouds, the moon and the stars, twelve days more of eating, drinking, sleeping, chatting, thinking, worrying, exercising, getting dressed, getting undressed, bathing, putting on make-up, taking off make-up, cutting my nails, laughing, crying, breathing, practicing yoga, practicing the piano, singing, thinking about the future, thinking about the past, breathing, feeling the beat of my heart, imagining, walking on cobblestone streets, walking on my dry brown grass, noticing the change of the leaves from green to fall colors, feeling the air on my face, feeling the rain on my head, knowing that life is good, or simply knowing that life is and I am part of it, that I am part of everything I see and my question is: (because there is always a question) Where does the tree end and I begin? Or where do I end and where does the tree begin?

Am I the same or am I different?

Ah, I am twelve days older.

That’s life

on this planet

in this moment.

Soy Lorena.
