Anabela y Alón/ Annabelle and Alon

Alón no sabía qué decir.

¿Me explico?

--Sí,--dijo Alón.

--¿Me perdonas mi impaciencia?

--Entonces, ¿qué has observado?

Annabelle and Alon

Annabelle came close to Alon and he was glad to see her again. He shook his leaves and stood up a little taller.

“Hi, Annabelle, I’m so glad to see—“ but he couldn’t finish because right away the little cloud interrupted him.

“Alon, I’m very upset with you, you haven’t listened to me and you haven’t done what I told you to do!”

Alon didn’t know what to say.

“What did I tell you to do, huh?” Annabelle asked him.

“Uh…uh…first of all, don’t scold me, Annabelle, I can’t go around the sky like you and learn things there. I’m always here in the same place.”

“Oh!” Annabelle said and came down to the earth to be closer to the little oak tree. “Forgive me, Alon, you know that I’m impatient and I really didn’t mean to scold you. It’s just that when I understand something I think everyone should understand it the same as me, but in truth, we all follow our path in different ways, taking our time the best way we can and I shouldn’t expect you to do everything like me. Does that make sense?"

“Yes,” said Alon.

“Will you forgive me my impatience?”

“Of course.” Once again Alon was happy to have the little cloud there.

There was a moment of silence.

Then Alon said, “You told me to observe everything.”

“So what have you observed?”

“The snake came looking for refuge, the cat came and made friends with the snake and they both went off leaving me alone.”

“Alon, my friend, you have to look at things more deeply. How did the snake arrive?”

“The way they do.”

“No, I mean, how did it feel when it arrived? What did it want?”

“Oh, it was very afraid, thinking the cat wanted to kill it.”

“Yes, and what did you do?”

“I covered it with my trunk.”

“Then the cat came, right? And what was it like?”

“Valiant was very sad because they had given him a silly name and I told him that I could call him whatever he wanted and he told me that he wanted the name ‘Valiant.’ That made him feel better.”

“What else?”

“He was also sad because everyone was afraid of him and he just wanted to have friends and play in the grass with them.”

“What did you do?”

“I introduced Carley to Valiant.”

Suddenly Alon realized that he has helped others all his life; the ant, when he snapped off a leaf to give it to the queen of the ants, Chico, the little bird who couldn’t fly until Alon encouraged him to, introducing Valiant to Carley who are now friends and are happy.

“You have the ability to create happiness,” said Annabelle as if she were reading Alon’s mind.

“But if I can bring happiness to others, why am I not happy?” asked Alon.

Otra Vez Solo/ Alone Again

¡No seas tonto!

Alón miró arriba y vio a la pequeña nube, Anabela.

Alone Again

Finally Valiant spoke. “Carley, do you want to get on my back and we can go for a walk?”

“Well, okay, “ Carley said, and she quickly slithered up Valiant’s leg and settled onto his neck looking like a diamond necklace. Valiant started to skip and run and spin around in the grass while Alon watched them with longing because he couldn’t do the same. They kept on playing each time farther and farther away until Alon could hardly see them.

“Wait!” he shouted. “Valiant, Carley, wait, please, don’t go!”

But it was already too late, now they were mere points in the distance and Alon was alone and sadder than ever. He sighed. His leaves felt heavy, his branches stiff and his roots stubborn. Oh, if only I could walk, he thought, I would be so happy.

At that moment a breeze arrived tickling his leaves. Happiness, said the breeze, happiness is………and the breeze left without finishing the sentence.

There was no happiness for Alon, he was born an oak tree and that’s what he would be for the rest of his life, an oak tree who would spend his years in only one place, who would have only one point of view forever, who would watch the world pass by in front of him without his being part of the movement, the action. Alon ruminated like that all summer until his leaves began to turn from green to red and soon he would have to prepare himself for the long, cold sleep of winter, withstanding the winds and snowfalls, standing there bare.

“Alon, don’t be stupid!”

Alon looked up and saw the little cloud, Annabelle.

La Culebra, El Gato y El Arbol/The Snake, The Cat and The Tree

Mi Musa no me deja terminarlo todavía./ This is Episode number 12 of the story that began on October 3rd. My Muse will not let me finish it yet).

The Snake, the Cat and the Tree

“Snakes?” Valiant asked with surprise. “I’m not afraid of snakes, and they don’t give me the creeps either. In fact, well, they’re very very mysterious and I believe they are psychic. Yes, Alon, they can read you the future.” And in that moment Valiant was very sure of himself.

“Well, really? You think they can tell the future? Are you sure about that?”

“Of course,” Valiant said. "In fact, a short while ago I saw a snake here in the grass and I wanted to ask it a question about my future, but when I got near it, it ran away so fast and for all my searching I couldn’t find it. I tell you, it’s the same story. Everyone’s afraid of me.” And once again Valiant sighed deeply.

Alon was very glad to hear what Valiant was saying. Now he was sure that the cat would not be any danger to the fearful snake who was still stuck to his trunk. It’s time, he thought.

“Valiant, I want to introduce you to my new friend, the snake that was hanging out in the grass,” Alon said.

“Where is he?” Valiant asked looking all around.

Alon shook his leaves somewhat. “Little snake,” he said, “don’t be afraid, come and meet a friend of mine.”

Very slowly Alon felt the snake slither down his trunk and very shyly get in between Alon and the cat. Valiant’s eyes opened really wide and when he began to speak, the snake wrapped itself around Alon’s trunk.

“Don’t be afraid, little snake, I want us to be friends. We can help each other,” Valiant said. The snake relaxed a little and raising up its head stuck out its tongue.

“What’s your name?” Alon asked. “We don’t want to keep on calling you ‘Little Snake’ all the time.”

With a low voice as soft as the water that runs through the stream, the snake answered, “Carley.”

In that moment one could say that Alon and Valiant fell in love with the snake and were unable to speak for the longest time.

Amigos Improbables/ Unlikely Friends

--¡No cazando, jugando!—gritó Valiente.

Unlikely Friends

Valiant sat down and sighed deeply.

“Everyone thinks I’m dangerous. It’s just that I’m playful. I like to play but nobody wants to play with me. When they see me, they all run away.”

“I’ve seen you hunting insects in the grass,” Alon said.
“Not hunting, playing!” shouted Valiant. “But they don’t believe me. The bees sting me, the dragonflies fly away from me and the butterflies tickle my tail and disappear.”

“What would you like to do?” Alon asked him.

“Well, have friends, have other animals look for me, climb on my back so we can run around, jumping together, laughing together, having fun playing in the sun.”

Alon wondered if the cat was telling the truth. He seemed sincere and really Alon never saw him kill another creature; nevertheless, cats were famous for being savage like and cruel, hunting birds and eating mice. The snake’s life really was in his leaves, or rather on his trunk. Alon didn’t want to condemn the snake to his death, but he didn’t like seeing Valiant so sad. What to do?

“What do you think of snakes?” Alon asked Valiant. At that moment, upon asking the question Alon felt the snake tremble and his little heart beat faster against his trunk. Oh, I hope I haven’t make a mistake, thought Alon. If the cat is a liar and the poor snake ends up dead because of me, well, I’ll feel terrible.

La Culebra En El Pasto/ Snake In The Grass

--¿Quién me habla?—preguntó.

--Me llamo Alón—Alón interrumpió.

Snake in the Grass

Alon looked all around and at first didn’t see anything.

“I’m in danger.” Again he heard the voice in the grass this time, near his trunk. He looked down and saw a small garden snake trembling with fear.

“What’s wrong?” Alon asked. “How can I help you?”

“Hide me please, that cat wants to kill me.”

Alon saw the cat coming toward him in leaps and bounds and he knew that he had to think fast.

“Climb up the back of my trunk and don’t move. I’ll cover you well and distract the cat.” The snake obeyed him without saying another word. As he climbed up Alon’s trunk, Alon was being tickled and it was hard not to laugh, but he managed to keep a straight face.

The cat stopped in front of the little oak tree with a puzzled look on his face.

“Hi there, kitty,” Alon said.

The cat was startled. “Who’s talking to me?” he asked.

“Me, Alon, at your service,” Alon said and shook his leaves.

“What? A talking tree? Since when do trees know how to speak?” the cat asked.

“Hmmm, since when do cats know how to speak?” Alon asked.

“Since always,” the cat answered.

“What a novelty!” Alon said.

“It’s not any novelty, my little oak tree—“

“My name is Alon,” Alon interrupted.

“Alon, then,” the cat said with an air of conceit. “So, my friend—“

“Forgive me, but we are not friends yet,” Alon began.

“You see? It’s always like this, nobody wants to be my friend, everyone is afraid of me.”

“I didn’t say that I don’t want to be your friend,” Alon said, “It’s just that I don’t know you yet and you haven’t even told me your name.”

“They gave me a dumb name,” said the cat, “and I don’t like it.”

“What should I say then? How do you want me to call you?”

“You mean you can call me the name that I want?” The cat wanted to know.

“Why not?”

“Well, I want to be called Valiant, but they gave me the name Fluff because I’m furry, oh, how embarrassing.”

“To me you are Valiant,” Alon said.

All of a sudden Alon remembered about the snake stuck on his back and he wanted to see if there was a way to create a friendship between the cat and the snake, but he didn’t exactly know how to begin.

“Umm, uh…are you interested in having friends, Valiant?” Alon asked.

La Maestra/ The Teacher

Ponte a pensar…..no, mejor, ponte a observar.

–Soy tu maestra. ¿No sabías?

--Si eres mi maestra, entonces puedes contestarme. Tengo muchas preguntas.

Vas a ver…..vas a veeeeeeeeeerrrrrrr.

--¡No me dijiste tu nombre!—Alón gritó.

The Teacher

“Understand what?” Alon asked.
The cloud sighed. “Everything happens very slowly here. Up there where I live everything changes reeeeeaaaallly quickly and we learn what we have to learn much faster than down here in the earth where you have your roots. I’m sorry, Alon, but I get a little impatient with life here. Do you see how I can change shape in a second?”

Then the cloud first changed from a little girl to a furry bear, then to a dog with its mouth open, then to a witch with her broom and then back again to a little girl with long hair. Alon was stunned. He didn’t know what to say.

“I know what you’re thinking, Alon. This is my role in life, yours is different. Think….no, better yet, start observing. This is your homework, to observe every every every thing in life.”

“My homework?” Alon asked.

“Yes,” said the cloud with a big smile. “I’m your teacher. Didn’t you know that?”

“If you’re my teacher, then you can answer me. I have a lot of questions.”

“Oh, no,” said the cloud and started to rise up to the sky. “Observe, Alon, let nothing escape you. You will see…..you will seeeeeeeeeee.”

“You didn’t tell me your name!” shouted Alon. And from far away he heard the cloud say “Anabelle………….Anabelle………is……….my……….name......today………”

And she disappeared leaving Alon alone again. Observe everything, he thought.

Suddenly he heard a small voice shout: “Help, help, please help me!”
