La Culebra, El Gato y El Arbol/The Snake, The Cat and The Tree

Mi Musa no me deja terminarlo todavía./ This is Episode number 12 of the story that began on October 3rd. My Muse will not let me finish it yet).

The Snake, the Cat and the Tree

“Snakes?” Valiant asked with surprise. “I’m not afraid of snakes, and they don’t give me the creeps either. In fact, well, they’re very very mysterious and I believe they are psychic. Yes, Alon, they can read you the future.” And in that moment Valiant was very sure of himself.

“Well, really? You think they can tell the future? Are you sure about that?”

“Of course,” Valiant said. "In fact, a short while ago I saw a snake here in the grass and I wanted to ask it a question about my future, but when I got near it, it ran away so fast and for all my searching I couldn’t find it. I tell you, it’s the same story. Everyone’s afraid of me.” And once again Valiant sighed deeply.

Alon was very glad to hear what Valiant was saying. Now he was sure that the cat would not be any danger to the fearful snake who was still stuck to his trunk. It’s time, he thought.

“Valiant, I want to introduce you to my new friend, the snake that was hanging out in the grass,” Alon said.

“Where is he?” Valiant asked looking all around.

Alon shook his leaves somewhat. “Little snake,” he said, “don’t be afraid, come and meet a friend of mine.”

Very slowly Alon felt the snake slither down his trunk and very shyly get in between Alon and the cat. Valiant’s eyes opened really wide and when he began to speak, the snake wrapped itself around Alon’s trunk.

“Don’t be afraid, little snake, I want us to be friends. We can help each other,” Valiant said. The snake relaxed a little and raising up its head stuck out its tongue.

“What’s your name?” Alon asked. “We don’t want to keep on calling you ‘Little Snake’ all the time.”

With a low voice as soft as the water that runs through the stream, the snake answered, “Carley.”

In that moment one could say that Alon and Valiant fell in love with the snake and were unable to speak for the longest time.

Amigos Improbables/ Unlikely Friends

--¡No cazando, jugando!—gritó Valiente.

Unlikely Friends

Valiant sat down and sighed deeply.

“Everyone thinks I’m dangerous. It’s just that I’m playful. I like to play but nobody wants to play with me. When they see me, they all run away.”

“I’ve seen you hunting insects in the grass,” Alon said.
“Not hunting, playing!” shouted Valiant. “But they don’t believe me. The bees sting me, the dragonflies fly away from me and the butterflies tickle my tail and disappear.”

“What would you like to do?” Alon asked him.

“Well, have friends, have other animals look for me, climb on my back so we can run around, jumping together, laughing together, having fun playing in the sun.”

Alon wondered if the cat was telling the truth. He seemed sincere and really Alon never saw him kill another creature; nevertheless, cats were famous for being savage like and cruel, hunting birds and eating mice. The snake’s life really was in his leaves, or rather on his trunk. Alon didn’t want to condemn the snake to his death, but he didn’t like seeing Valiant so sad. What to do?

“What do you think of snakes?” Alon asked Valiant. At that moment, upon asking the question Alon felt the snake tremble and his little heart beat faster against his trunk. Oh, I hope I haven’t make a mistake, thought Alon. If the cat is a liar and the poor snake ends up dead because of me, well, I’ll feel terrible.

La Culebra En El Pasto/ Snake In The Grass

--¿Quién me habla?—preguntó.

--Me llamo Alón—Alón interrumpió.

Snake in the Grass

Alon looked all around and at first didn’t see anything.

“I’m in danger.” Again he heard the voice in the grass this time, near his trunk. He looked down and saw a small garden snake trembling with fear.

“What’s wrong?” Alon asked. “How can I help you?”

“Hide me please, that cat wants to kill me.”

Alon saw the cat coming toward him in leaps and bounds and he knew that he had to think fast.

“Climb up the back of my trunk and don’t move. I’ll cover you well and distract the cat.” The snake obeyed him without saying another word. As he climbed up Alon’s trunk, Alon was being tickled and it was hard not to laugh, but he managed to keep a straight face.

The cat stopped in front of the little oak tree with a puzzled look on his face.

“Hi there, kitty,” Alon said.

The cat was startled. “Who’s talking to me?” he asked.

“Me, Alon, at your service,” Alon said and shook his leaves.

“What? A talking tree? Since when do trees know how to speak?” the cat asked.

“Hmmm, since when do cats know how to speak?” Alon asked.

“Since always,” the cat answered.

“What a novelty!” Alon said.

“It’s not any novelty, my little oak tree—“

“My name is Alon,” Alon interrupted.

“Alon, then,” the cat said with an air of conceit. “So, my friend—“

“Forgive me, but we are not friends yet,” Alon began.

“You see? It’s always like this, nobody wants to be my friend, everyone is afraid of me.”

“I didn’t say that I don’t want to be your friend,” Alon said, “It’s just that I don’t know you yet and you haven’t even told me your name.”

“They gave me a dumb name,” said the cat, “and I don’t like it.”

“What should I say then? How do you want me to call you?”

“You mean you can call me the name that I want?” The cat wanted to know.

“Why not?”

“Well, I want to be called Valiant, but they gave me the name Fluff because I’m furry, oh, how embarrassing.”

“To me you are Valiant,” Alon said.

All of a sudden Alon remembered about the snake stuck on his back and he wanted to see if there was a way to create a friendship between the cat and the snake, but he didn’t exactly know how to begin.

“Umm, uh…are you interested in having friends, Valiant?” Alon asked.
