Obstacles/Obstáculos

“Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.”

--teabag wisdom

Two basic thoughts are roaming around in my head today, well, two basic concepts or ideas: one, the concept of learning something new, okay not entirely new, but rather perfecting something I already know….kind of. You see, I think, no, I’m sure that the body learns much better than the mind, yes, think about it, who learned to ride a bicycle, your mind or your body?

So who plays the piano? If my mind had to play, I’m sure it would fail miserably, but my fingers somehow learn to find the keys and remember them, if my mind stays out of it…somewhat. Yes, yes, I know there is brain activity involved in what our body learns, but I really think we don’t give our bodies enough credit. They actually have a “mind of their own.” Babies don’t sit around thinking of how to walk, their body just does it.

About a hundred years ago I read a book called “Inner Tennis” and it was all about letting your body hit the ball without doing a lot of technical thinking. It was true, the best tennis I ever played was when I wasn’t thinking at all, but just following the ball with my eyes, watching it bounce and swinging my racket at it, willing it to go where I wanted. Oh, it was beautiful, but the moment I thought, “I hope I don’t miss this shot,” I was doomed, because my “mind” pushed my body out of the picture, and of course I missed the shot.

Obstacles, the title of today’s blog, you see the body doesn’t put obstacles in front of us, our mind does, our thinking….for example, “Oh, I can’t record my piano playing, I’m not good enough.” It’s our thinking that says “can’t,” not our body. If we allow it, our body is daring, smart, open, willing to learn. Our body says, I CAN!

The other thought, idea, concept, I just decided, I’ll save for another day.

Come back, Sun/Regresa, Sol

"Bring back the sun in my life. I need your love to be there..."
-- Zucchero

The rain we need, oh yes, how appropriately the weather mirrored my day of sadness--raindrops pouring from the sky, teardrops pouring from my eyes.

How quickly it all passes--the earth absorbing the rain, the moment absorbing my tears cleansing the pain, converting it into relief...ah.

I run today under a thick cloud cover. I miss the sun, but I know he is there behind the clouds. I know he has not abandoned me, I know he never will, and so I sweat as I run and my sweat is necessary to release the toxins from my body as my tears are necessary to release the hurt.

It is perfect. Things are different today, but it's still raining, a gentle, soft loving kind of rain that caresses the ground with its tender droplets and the plants in my garden soak it up and wait for the sun to come back, to feel his warmth once again.

How wonderful it is!

"Come back the Sun, we will be like children..." Zucchero.

Regresa, Sol

"Qué regrese el sol en mi vida. Necesito que esté tu amor."
--Zucchero

Gravity

And so just as gravity

Holds us in its embrace

Your energy and my energy

Are connected and we hold each other

As the Earth holds us.

The ground you walk upon is the

Same ground upon which I dance

The air you breathe was once inside my lungs

You drank my tears and they flowed in your veins.

The breeze touches me and I am

Reminded of the gentle touch of your finger tips

On my arm, the soft look in your eyes.

What holds us, what keeps us from

Falling apart?

Is it the same gravity that keeps our

Feet on the ground?

When is love wrong? ¿Cuándo es el amor, amor equivocado?

I was thinking about the concept of “love” and how valuable, desirable, wonderful, frustrating, beautiful, hopeful, lustful, exciting, pleasant, fulfilling and comforting it can be.

In English we have one word for it, yet love can have so many varied emotions attached to it. The love we have for our children is so different from the love we have for our lover, for example. Our love for our children tends to be unconditional, but the love we have for our lover/partner/spouse usually contains many conditions….monogamy being one major condition, which reminds me of the 60s and the hippies who thought we could all have “open marriages” and “free love” but they forgot about the ego and its demands. Unless we can all overcome the sensitivity and defensiveness of the ego, it’s very difficult to express love unconditionally.

What about friendship? Do we put demands on our friends or do we let them be who they are? Is it easier to love a friend unconditionally than a lover or spouse? Some philosophers say that friendship is more valuable and stronger than a love relationship that includes sex. Why? Is it because we don’t put the same conditions on our friends that we do on our lovers? Do we love our friends more than we love our lover/partner/spouse? Hmm. Lots of questions to ponder. Does anyone have an answer? Perhaps there are many answers, many points of view.

So my question is: Is love always good? Is it ever “wrong?” Like when it turns to lust?

Is real love tolerance for our differences?

If you love someone, can he/she be less than perfect?

If we are all part of something bigger than our single self, then doesn’t that mean loving me and loving you is the same?

How can I separate you from me?

Maybe John Lennon was right—love is all you need.

Thee and Thou

(First of all, I'd like to give a big "THANK YOU" to Indie of indeterminacy.blogspot.com for mentioning my blog on his blog. Then I'd like to share with everyone who comes here to please read the three stories from May, 2007. The first story is "Where is the Answer?" Thank you!)

This morning as I was doing my morning ritual dance in front of the house I saw the moon looking faded but still up in the sky as the sun was rising on the other side. She had a dent in her top side now, part of her disappearing act and once again she will grow smaller and smaller and I will search in vain for her only to be surprised again when she returns and reaches her fullness and her beauty melts my heart.

I love you, Moon, I thought to myself but then decided that “you” was much too formal. “I love thee, Moon,” I wanted to say, but realized that sounded much too antiquated. Why did English lose its intimate form of speech? The romance languages managed to keep it and it’s beautiful and full of nuance. You know where you stand with people when you have a choice as to how to address them. They know where they stand with you. It’s good. It’s sweet. It’s perfect. But we don’t have it. Everyone is “you,” or “ya’ll” or “youse”, but those are not singular forms. I’m afraid the singular form of an intimate “you” is gone forever.

Imagine if I said to my husband, “Honey, wouldst thou like thy coffee now?” Oh my god, he’d think I had lost my marbles.

Well, I don’t see “thee” coming back anytime soon. What a shame!

I think so/ Creo que sí

Did I pick up my heart this time? Well, maybe, this time everything was different. This time I was stronger, this time I could see beyond the present moment. This time I could see that there would be other "moments," that I would return and "live again," as the saying goes. This time I didn't cry in front of the customs official, in fact, far from it, I just moved with the moment and lived the moment step by step, opening to each minute and each hour.

Houston was different this time. They made us go through security again, after our luggage was searched in Mexico, after we trekked through the flat mechanical walkways and thought we were through with all of that, again we took off our shoes, piled our carry-on luggage onto the conveyor belt to be x-rayed once again. Finally it was coffee time and when we saw the familiar Starbucks sign, I said to Teddy, jokingly, "Honey, we're home."

So we sat at a table with our overpriced coffee in paper cups and watched people pass by noticing who was wearing flip-flops and trying to figure out why they wear them, finding no reasonable answer.

There were four Mexican men at a nearby table drinking beer and chatting and I couldn't help feeling the urge to go talk to them just to hear the language again close up. But I will be back, I will reutrn again and again to my Tierra del Sol, tierra de mi Sol.
